HISTORY  OF SOME  OF  THE  TROPHIES

THE SPRATTSDOWN  MEDICK  PERPETUAL  TROPHY - presented to the winner of the 2’3 eventer trials at the Cross Country day.

This trophy was donated to the Club by Emma Hayter

I bought Sprattsdown Medick (Dixie) when I was just 14 years old from Peggy and Brian Tillyer, she had just turned 7 and had only recently been broken in by Jenny Tillyer. Previous to this she had been running the forest and had had one foal. Dixie taught me a lot, even when I got it wrong - which was quite regularly! She was always so forgiving; she just took control, sorted her strides out and popped over whatever was there! She was a good all rounder and very versatile so we enjoyed success at all the local riding club events whatever they were; we were nearly always in the rosettes. However her main passion was for jumping and boy could she jump! And at great speed to! I recall hearing someone say once as we entered the ring for our jump off 'watch this pony!' and as always, she delivered!  She competed at the New Forest County show in the Knightwood challenge 3 times and every time she did me proud.

Unfortunately, as she got older she developed severe breathing and other associated problems. Unable to be ridden I took her for walks but even this became too much. Her spirit is now resting at Culverly green, one of our favourite rides. I am so pleased to have had the opportunity to provide Mopley RC with this trophy in her memory as the event reflects what she was so good at – jumping!

ASHFIELD  CHAD  TROPHY - presented to the winner of the 2’9 eventer trials at the Cross Country day.

This trophy was donated to the Club by Lynne Hicks (nee Hughes)

I bought Chad from New Forest Commoner Ben Ralphs in 1979 as a five year old, having already ridden him for a year.   He was out of a cob mare of unknown breeding by a T.B. stallion.  I adored him until the day he died in July 1999 at the age of 25.  He was 15hh and the nicest tempered and honest horse imaginable.  Having no transport to travel to shows for the first few years we were limited to local Riding Club events and Chad took part in all the Mopley events, including jumping, barrel racing, mounted games, treasure hunts.  I am sure this early education helped make him the superb all-rounder he was.   He went on to win many hunter trial and show jumping classes, including BSJA affiliated British Novice classes – of which he won six and was second in two!  .  He was almost unbeatable in Handy Hunter and Handy Pony competitions.  However his greatest love was taking part in the Pony Drifts and Hunting on the Forest at which time he became very strong to hold!  He also competed in the New Forest Boxing Day Point to Point and came second in the Veterans class with his breeder when they were both OAPs!  Every year when his Cup is won and presented at the Hunter Trial I feel very proud and honoured that his memory lives on through Mopley Riding Club.

THE  MAGIC   PERPETUAL CUPpresented to winner of 14 years and under minimus class at the Cross Country day

This cup was donated to the Club by Lorraine Carter

Magic was born in 1980, he is a true old fashioned forest type – built to work, sturdy, bold, and on the odd occasion stubborn! When he came up for loan on January 1st 1989 this horse mad teenager jumped at the chance to have a pony to ride. He taught me everything I needed to know – especially how to be bucked off, several times a ride to start with!! With time he began to co-operate more and I was hooked so bought him two years later. Since then I’ve done everything with him – hacked for miles, gymkhanas, all the local riding clubs events, local shows and more. His claim to fame was in the early 90’s when he won New Forest Riding club’s 20 mile long distance ride against a load of posh Arabs, and that was after I’d hacked him there because he only learnt to box when he was 20! He was never a fan of show jumping but he’d do it for me at his own speed! But cross country that was his favourite and provided he didn’t stop to eat the first straw bale jump he’d fly the rest hanging on to his novice rider some how.

Magic is very well known and taught too many children to mention to ride over the years. Despite having several ponies Magic is probably the best jack of all trades pony that I will ever own and everyone who knows him has a soft spot for him so I was very pleased to be able to sponsor the 14 years and under minimus XC class - Magic can continue to encourage youngsters in his favourite sport even when he does decide that he needs to hang up his shoes and take life easy.

STACEY  HARTLEY  PERPETUAL  SHIELD presented to winners of the minimus pairs class at the Cross Country day

This shield was donated to the Club in commemoration of Stacey Hartley. Stacey was diagnosed with melanoma, skin cancer, when she was just 20 years old and died 5 months later.

As a child Stacey was a regular rider at all the Mopley events and her name was often seen in the results with her pony Ashley Carenza; she won the minimus pairs hunter trials when it was at Warren Farm, Beaulieu

BRIAN  TILLYER  PERPETUAL  PLATE presented to the winner of the 2’6 New Forest  Pony jumping at the annual show

For many years Brian was the ‘behind the scenes’ helper who built and maintained the set of wooden jumps the club owned and any other equipment. He would help set up for the events and then enjoy watching the jumping events giving encouragement to all the riders – though he used to say he could write a book on the excuses people gave as to why they didn’t win that day! He was a breeder of New Forest ponies and so it was fitting that the trophy was specifically for this breed.

LIMEKILN  WILDEYE TROPHYpresented to the winner of the 2’9 jumping at the annual show

This trophy was donated to the Club by Mavis Garrett in memory of Limekiln Wildeye Woody 1989 - 2012

Woody was a quirky chap and was know at Jenny's as 'snorter'! He ran five point to points, winning one and third four times. Was one of the first ponies to jump at the New Forest Show in the Knightwood Challenge and was placed third. He jumped for the N.F.P.E.C. for several years in Indoor and Outdoor Area Novice Team Jumping qualifying for National Championships which the teams won or were placed. Also jumped for the same club at Hickstead in teams of three, which the team was placed second out of 110 teams and were the only all pony team. Woody loved to be out on the N.F. Drifts, he took part in Mopley Club events and local shows, but he mostly loved his jumping and going as fast as he could!!

THE BLACKFIELD  TREASURE  TROPHY- – presented at the AGM  for the  rider and horse / pony partnership who has bonded into the best and most successful partnership over the previous 12 months

This trophy was donated by Sheila Holt in memory of Treasure (1972 – 1999) who won or was placed in youngstock showing, ridden showing, dressage, prix caprilli, hunter trials, show jumping ODE, long distance rides, gymkhana and most riding Club and fun activities.
